Your Sun Devils are invited to attend a unique event on Monday, Nov. 13, when U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy leads a town hall conversation for ASU students on the topic of mental health and the risks of social isolation.

Part of the Surgeon General’s We Are Made to Connect Tour to promote social connectedness among college students, the event will be held from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Arizona Ballroom of the Memorial Union on the Tempe campus. One of our nation’s leading health experts, Dr. Murthy will be joined by ASU student and Miss America 2022 Emma Broyles, who will share experiences from her own journey.

The event will help highlight the message that mental health is health. Balancing and navigating school, work, life, relationships and the challenges facing our world can be hard and overwhelming. Hearing from experts and peers can help Sun Devils see that they are not alone in their journey.

During this event, students will also learn how to help friends and family who reach out for help. When surveyed, the majority of individuals said they do not feel prepared to support their peers who reach out for mental health support. This event will help students feel more prepared.

The town hall will include activations from Starbucks, MTV and Active Minds outside the Memorial Union prior to the conversation. Space is limited, so encourage your students to RSVP today.

The Surgeon General is traveling to colleges across the country throughout the month of November to inspire people to incorporate moments of connection into their daily lives to help improve their health and well-being.

The event will include interactive experiences where Dr. Murthy will issue a 5-for-5 Connection Challenge to students, challenging them to take 5 actions for 5 days that express gratitude, offer support, or ask for help from people in their lives.

“I am thrilled to embark on the We Are Made to Connect Tour and speak to young people about healthy relationships and their impact on mental health. Loneliness is a widespread national health problem — one that impacts young Americans at surprisingly high rates,” Dr. Murthy said.

“Just like exercise and nutrition, our relationships with one another are fundamental components of our overall health and well-being. The tour and connection challenge will help students learn how to better incorporate moments of connection into their daily lives.”

Encourage your student to RSVP for the Nov. 13 town hall here.
