For any parent sending their adult child off to college, this is an exciting yet stressful time. There is a list of concerns that come up, emotions experienced, as well as normal stressors felt. Moreover, an added concern parents are being faced with is sending their student off to college post-pandemic.

In 2019, 60.9% of students at Arizona State University (2019), “rated their overall stress as more than average.” Furthermore, 15.7 % of ASU students reported that stress affected their academic performance (ASU, 2019). Different forms of stress seem to play a major role and is a known barrier in a student’s academic success. Students attending college post-pandemic may have this added stressor. Knowing the resources available to support your student as they transition into college this fall, may support their emotional wellbeing and overall academic performance. Additionally, supporting you as their parent find safety in knowing that your student is prepared and well cared for.

Universities and colleges have implemented many resources to helps students address and cope with different stressors post-pandemic. Arizona State University offers Health services where students may schedule same day appointments with a provider. Additionally, ASU offers Counseling services 24/7 to help support students in crisis, experiencing anxiety, stress, depression and so much more. Lastly, colleges such as Mary Lou Fulton Teachers college offers supports such as wellness and academic coaches who are dedicated to support students academically, explore time management, learn new coping strategies through one on one sessions, workshops and events.

Families and students are encouraged to become familiar with the resources available at the university and the college the will be attending this fall. Support your student in asking questions as well as exploring and learning to be proactive in their own wellness and academic success before the semester begins.
