Whether your Sun Devil is an incoming or returning student, applying for financial aid at ASU starts with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA. Family members and students are encouraged to fill out the FAFSA regardless of income to determine potential eligibility for many types of aid, such as scholarships, grants and loans.
Apply early by ASU's priority filing date of Jan. 15 since financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The FAFSA is available each year. Below you'll find a detailed list of the steps in the financial aid process:
File a FAFSA
Complete and submit your FAFSA, which can be found online at www.fafsa.gov.
Student Aid Report (SAR)
Once your FAFSA is received and processed, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) by email from the U.S. Dept. of Education in 3-4 days. Review it carefully and make any corrections at fafsa.gov.
Award Notification
Once ASU receives your FAFSA information, Financial Aid and Scholarship Services may request verification documents. After verification has been completed, or if no verification documents were requested, you will receive a Financial Aid Notification (FAN) letter from ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. When you receive the award notification letter, review it carefully along with any required certifications and enclosures. You must accept or decline your awards using My ASU (the university's online student portal). Future award notices will be sent to your ASU email address informing you of viewing availability.
Account Balance
Your financial aid award is automatically applied to your account balance. If your financial aid award does not cover your entire bill, you are responsible for paying the remaining charges. Review your payment options in My ASU.
Remaining Funds
Excess funds (amount of your aid that is left after tuition, fees, books and supplies have been deducted) are mailed or direct deposited in your bank account no sooner than a few days before the start of the semester. The easiest and fastest way to get your remaining funds is to enroll in direct deposit.
